The more general form of your question would be "WIll Java Platforms in the Cloud revolutionize Java Development?". Even if GAE has some strict limitations, that doesn't mean all forms of Java in the Cloud will be as limiting. At Stax.net, we've built our Java Platform as a Service using using Amazon EC2 which allows us to be far less restrictive so developers can use the Java platform features they are used to.

In the end, making some reasonable concessions in Java features used by apps to leverage the power and flexibility of cloud computing will likely prove to be a valuable trade off for many, many apps.

The not thread issue really takes away a lot of flexbility. I was looking to use Quartz to schedule some tasks. Hope this change soon.

I really cannot understand the no-threads issue.

Logging is a non-issue as *you* can use slf4j and when they finally support logback you can just change a jar or maven dep.

But back to the no-threads issue what is it that you can write and run in GAE, without creating any threads?
