Pebble or Wordpress for multiple blogs?

I mentioned in my previous post about coming across Glen Smith’s blog and one of his entries relates to using the Pebble blogging platform. I’m a Wordpress fan because it is highly popular (I have four), easy to install on basically any web host and a lot of support in themes, widgets, etc.

However, at work we are going to be using blogs on our sites and the out-of-the-box implementation from the publishing package we bought pretty much sucks when it comes to blogging. I was just going to install multiple instances of Wordpress, build a custom theme to match our site and let it roll. Taking a cursory look at Pebble’s site led me to the feature that allows multiple blog instances to run via one deployment of Pebble. This I like.

The one thing I’m not particularly fond of is the URLs it generates. I like that Wordpress’s URLs contain the post title (when configured properly) and I don’t see that in Pebble, although I may not have dug far enough into the docs to find it. While I am not an expert on it, there is some suggestion that keywords in URLs can help with search engines.

For our particular usage the URL issue isn’t a deal breaker but it sure would be nice. I suppose to be fair I should take a look at Roller as well, especially if it has multiple blog per deployment support.

How widely used is Pebble? Any suggestions for alternates?

If you’re looking at Pebble you can also take a look at Roller (www.rollerweblogger.com). It powers Sun’s blogs site and also handles the “meaningful urls” that you are looking for.

I started taking a look at Roller and it also seems to support multiple blogs via the ‘planet’ feature. I’ve gone too far in depth in it yet, but I will be looking at it more.

I did notice that Roller is the solution that Sun uses as well.

Thanks for the comment Steve!

And check out blojsom. It has multiple blog per deployment support.

I had completely forgotten about blojsom, thanks David

Yes, Pebble supports friendly URLs and you see this running on my blog.

Well that they do, thanks for the link Simon.
