My first 15-30 game

Last Friday I took my first leap into the middle limit games by playing in a 15-30 game at the Wynn. It was definately one of the more enjoyable games I’ve played in quite a while as it was much like playing in the 3-5 no limit game where most of the players know how to play.

I had an early rush through a combination of good late position playing and good laydowns. Most of my wins came when I was in the cutoff or on the button and got into a loose pot with medium cards such as connectors and weak Ax suited. Invariably I would hit one of my cards on the flop and either push the other players out with reraises or I would hit on the turn and have them call me down. Unfortunately I played a little too long and started playing weak and that cost me, but at least I knew what happened and I wasn’t getting run down by bad players or long shot draws. It was entirely my fault.

On the plus side, I was really comfortable at that table playing with those players. Best case I would say my skill level was in the middle of the pack as their were a couple of obvious semi-pros sitting there. That definately made it more enjoyable for me.

One thing that didn’t occur to me before I sat down was that every pot was almost always guaranteed to be over $100. Being used to playing in a 3-5 no limit, where a steal will only get you 25-50 bucks as most of the money comes after the flop, this game had quite a bit of money in preflop by comparison. I was also surprised that many people would call the big blind and if a middle position or early-late position player raised, many would fold. This was especially the case with a raise and reraise. Of course if they know what they are doing, they are supposed to fold, but that almost meant good size pots before the flop.

In short, I think I may have found my game of choice. At the very least I will be working on this game the most in the coming months.
