Is Apple going after gamers?

Apple seems to be embracing windows applications more and more lately and demonstrated some games running on a mac at their developer’s conference. While those in the know will say it is pretty easy to just install Windows via VMWare or Parallels and play your games there, there are two problems with that approach.

1. You need a copy of windows; legally at least, and who wants to drop a few hundred dollars just to play games on their mac?
2. It isn’t practical for the non-power user.

The second point is probably the single biggest reason for Apple to pursue this path. Apple really has two types of users, those who loves the ads on TV, think the computer is ‘cute’ and seemingly easy to use and buy it. The second type are the die-hard Mac lovers. The real power users; developers, video and audio producers, etc. Yes there are a few of us in the middle, but not many.

Big Money in Games

It doesn’t take a lot of research to find that hard core PC gamers spend big bucks on hardware. Take a look at any boutique PC builder and their machines are not cheap. Well, neither are really good Macs. There is a lot of horsepower in those MacPros but they are too expensive for the everyday or middle-of-the-road PC user.

Apple can sell a lot more of these bad boys if they could run PC-based games, and run them well and I’m sure Apple knows this too.
