Calling an all in on a flush and straight draw

So I’m playing out South Point in a 1-2 HL game and sitting with about $250 in front me or so in the 10 seat. As is typical in this game, there is a lot of preflop limping and post flop action. Being in late position I limp in with 7s8s. The flop comes 6dQs9s. What a beauty, both a flush and a straight draw not to mention a backdoor straight flush (for a high hand jackpot).

The Nemesis

Here is where it gets interesting. Sitting in the 5 seat is a guy that I just love to break. I’ve played with him a lot and he is one of these guys that thinks and A9os is a monster and is quite proud of himself when his dominated hand outdraws someone else. In short, I don’t like him and love to take his money.

On the flop the action is checked to this guy who also checks and is checked all the way to me. I make a bet of about 1/3 of the pot to see where everybody is at. I get one caller, then this guy goes all in. The action is folded over to me where I put him either on AQ or maybe a set. His all-in tells me he wants to protect his hand pretty bad. I think about it for oh, 30 seconds or so figuring that I can’t be too bad of a dog (not entirely correct though), however the tilt factor if I hit my hand would be more than beautiful. So I call.

He flips over a set of 9’s and I turn over my 78s. Half the table stands up to see the action. The turn card is a Kh, not help to me. Then the Js comes on the river completing my flush, what a sight! The guy jumps up and storms out and I start raking in his chips.

The Analysis

On a hand like that everyone naturally starts analyzing the play and if it was correct and that. Most people agreed I should have made the call, however if it was anyone else — in a cash game, not a tournament — I probably would have folded. It just wouldn’t be worth losing my stack on a draw like that. Granted it was a big draw, but still. The next day I plugged in the cards in an odds calculator and it said I was 40% to win on the flop. Not as good as I thought I was it turned out. Oh well, seeing him storm out was well worth it.
