A good point on scaling Java

Having just written about scaling Java, I came across this post on Highscalability.com about Fotolog, the worlds largest photo blogging site. The interesting take away here is that he site was originally written in PHP, and the members area was rewritten in Java and now runs on half the boxes it used to.

To quote:

  • Their new “Fotolog memberpage” feature is written in Java with significant performance improvement. Page is cleaner with an improved response time.
  • They are now serving the site on less than half the boxes they were using.
  • Daily registrations are up over 35% given the improved performance and a requirement to register to post a guest book message.
  • The new code base allows them to innovate much more on the member experience.

Hmm… I believe I mentioned something about having less boxes in the long run…

Interesting none-the-less.
